I’m an Occupational Therapist, Counsellor and Coach who has worked for over 33 years in a wide range of fields across physical, mental health and learning disability in the NHS, Social Care, Housing, Residential and Nursing home sector and on the Work Programme. I’ve had the pleasure of working with many wonderful people in order to help them towards better health, well-being and independence or better care.
Being able to do the things that you value, roles and activities that are meaningful is key to your emotional, as well as physical health. Here are some examples of the diversity of my work :
‘John ‘ has a back problem that is stopping him working – he didn’t know what he could do. Without his work role, he became increasingly anxious and depressed, his O.C.D worsened resulting in excessive cleaning thereby exacerbating his pain .We worked together to explore factors affecting johns perceptions of pain, things that made him feel worse or better. Through exploring the activities that John carried out with his son we identified significant strengths that he was overlooking and how these could be translated into work skills and avenues. Through looking at his daily routine, we identified his capacities for work as well as ways of pacing himself and reducing muscular pain. John learnt to set boundaries with overcritical parents and to use new stress management tools including relaxation/ visualisation. John got back to work after 3 years off.
‘Suzi’ was bullied about her weight. She wanted to get back to work but had become agoraphobic, anxious, depressed. I worked with her to develop new interests and regain confidence using public transport and in gaining an understanding of her eating problems. She attended a weight off group and became a role model for others. Last time I saw her, her skin was glowing, she’d lost 4 stone, her eyes were bright and her whole posture demonstrated a new found confidence.
‘Annie’ is an 80 year old lady who wants to stay in her own home but really struggles with stairs and bathing. My involvement also involves support for her Carers and tailoring her care package and helping to reduce her social isolation.
‘Janes’ son has been diagnosed with a life long progressive condition I support the whole journey, adapting the home, providing specialist support and sourcing equipment, liaising with school and supporting the family.
‘Marty’ is worried about his memory. It turns out he was just under a lot of pressure with prospective redundancy looming and this had made him so anxious that he almost felt ‘out of his body’ and unable to focus and enjoy life….
if none of these sound like you, don’t worry ! It’s just a glimpse, call for for an initial chat ! I’ve been through a fair few challenges of my own with health worries and being a Carer and use many of the tools for myself in being committed to my own wellbeing. As a Counsellor/therapist and Coach, I can meet you exactly where you are …My approach is integrative i.e, I draw upon a wide range of therapeutic knowledge and skills from positive psychologies through to the latest cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness and acceptance approaches.
All The services are entirely individually tailored and can be a combination of face to face, walk and talk , phone or Skype. O.T services are usually provided in your home.
If I feel that you may be entitled or able to access a statutory health or social care service, I will advise you although many people just choose a private therapist in the same way you might pay privately for dental care, to see an osteopath , go to the gym etc. I won’t be ‘doing things to you per se’ but rather , I will be alongside you listening, encouraging, supporting, problem solving and helping you to help you !!
